Fluoride is found naturally in air, soil, many foods, and both fresh and salt water, and at optimal levels helps in making teeth more resistant to decay. Its presence in public drinking water ensures that all members of the community, especially those with limited access to dental care, receive vital protection against tooth decay. Although fluoride can be obtained from other sources, like toothpaste, water fluoridation provides an additional benefit for everyone. Research shows that water fluoridation has been instrumental in the overall global reduction in tooth decay, including here in Canada. As a result of the above, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) named CWF as one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.
